Congratulations to Gosford participant Travis on reaching his 6-month employment milestone after deciding to reinvent his career path.

After more than 20 years driving trucks, Travis decided it was time to take his working life in a new direction.

In May 2024, he joined Global Skills and met his Employment Consultant, Amy. Travis recalls, “I went to Global Skills and said, ‘I need to reinvent myself.’ Amy and I brainstormed many options, including support work. My sister works in the industry and really enjoys it, so I thought, why not?

“With Amy’s support, I enrolled in and completed a Certificate III in Community Services at TAFE with great results.”

When he finished TAFE, Travis was ready to work. “I had two years’ experience caring for my dad, which helped, but the training made a big difference,” he says. “It was thanks to Amy that I got my foot in the door of a new industry. She then supported me with everything I needed to start, including my First Aid course and required checks.”

In February, Travis began working with Pearl Homecare as a Support Worker. “Pearl is a fantastic place to work and very supportive,” he shares. “They provide relevant training, like enrolling me in a dementia course, which really helped me feel prepared.

“I love providing home support for older people. Every day is different, and you feel like you’re truly helping. I also learn a lot from my clients; they have so much life experience.”

Travis has since taken on an additional role in Business Development at Pearl, saying, “I’ve come a long way in ten months and, most importantly, I’m happy. I feel like this is the path I was meant to be on.”

Travis shared a special thanks to his teachers and Amy for their support. “My teachers at TAFE NSW Gosford went above and beyond, including helping me navigate Microsoft Teams and Amy organised everything I needed. Also, talking through everything with Amy really made a difference. This was my first experience with an employment service, and I’m very happy with the support I received.”
