Refugee, Fady, is helping to build the Parramatta Light Rail

Fady Kiswany is a 23-year-old refugee from Syria. A former Accountancy student in Syria’s capital Damascus he arrived in Australia almost two years ago with his parents and was connected with Global Skills’ Blacktown office as a jobactive participant. 

Keen to start earning an income immediately, Fady was eager to participate in one of Global Skills pre-employment program partnerships with Parramatta Light Rail, which eventually led to his employment as a Trainee with CPB Contractors.

“I had been working as a delivery driver but wanted greater employment security so I took this opportunity after finishing the two-week training,” he said. 

“Now I am working six days a week, have financial independence and learning a lot about Australian culture.” 

In his job with CPB, Fady’s work is different every day. 

“Some days it is fencing, shovelling, compacting or labouring. My Team Leader is very supportive and takes the time to explain things clearly to me. Everyone in the team is very patient and understanding and I have made some good friends.” 

Part of the support Global Skills provided Fady to help him succeed in his training and new role included purchasing work pants, shirts and PPE clothing, reimbursing petrol and Opal top ups to assist with transport costs and arranging the payment of a White Card and National Police Check.

“I was really surprised. I am thankful for all the things that Global Skills gave me so I could get a professional start. 

“They are in contact with me and support me wherever I am. They were great to work with.” 

Fady sees himself with the company in five years’ time and hopes to progress to take on more responsibility.

 “One day I will be travelling on the tram and I can say – I built that, I did that. That will be a very proud day for me”.
