Congratulations to Parramatta participant Hayley, now 4 years into a successful construction career after completing the Sydney Gateway Pre-Employment Program in 2022.

The program was a specialised initiative developed by John Holland and Seymour Whyte to create employment pathways into civil construction on the major Sydney Gateway project. As the lead employment services provider, Global Skills supported participants to apply for and complete the program.

Reflecting on the experience, Hayley said the program helped set her up for success.

“The training gave me a clear understanding of what to expect on a construction site and really helped build my confidence,” she said. “Coming into a new industry can be daunting, so having that preparation made a big difference.”

“I felt supported the whole way through. Global Skills helped with the training and preparation, and they regularly checked in,” she said. “John Holland also made sure we understood the role and what was expected of us, which made the transition into work much smoother.”

“I was nervous when I started work, but I was also excited. Once I met the team, everyone was welcoming and willing to help. My supervisors and teammates were great. They took the time to explain things properly and made sure I was working safely.”

Over the past four years, Hayley has gained hands-on experience across a wide range of construction activities, including excavation, temporary works, environmental controls, reinstatement and structural support works.

“I’ve really enjoyed being part of a team and seeing the progress of a major project. It’s rewarding to look at something you’ve helped build and know you’ve played a part in making it happen,” she said. “Every project is a chance to learn new skills and gain more experience.”

One of the people who has had the greatest impact on Hayley’s development in the industry is Superintendent Daniel (Dan) Caldicott. Through his mentorship, she gained valuable experience beyond her day-to-day role, developing a strong understanding of project planning, logistics, resource management and construction delivery. Hayley is grateful for Dan’s guidance, trust and commitment to developing people, which helped build her confidence, broaden her skills and play an important role in her professional growth.

Today, Hayley is passionate about encouraging other women to consider a career in construction.

“I’d tell them to back themselves and give it a go. Construction is not just for men anymore. There are so many opportunities for women.”

“I’m proud that I stepped outside my comfort zone and committed to something completely new. It’s shown me that I am capable of so much more than I realised.”
