This week, 18–25 May, is National Volunteer Week. Global Skills is celebrating Chatswood participant Richard and his journey from volunteering to reaching his 6-month employment milestone with Vinnies on the Lower North Shore.
After working as a barista, Richard stepped away from work to recover from surgery. When he felt ready to return, he connected with Global Skills Chatswood and started working with his Employment Consultant, Vanessa.
Richard shared, “Recovering from surgery took many years, and during that time I felt like I lost my confidence. Vanessa was really good to talk to. She helped me prepare for interviews and, along with Global Skills Community Engagement Officer Jennifer, helped me find volunteer work at Vinnies.”
“To me, volunteering is about staying active and building confidence and skills,” he said. “It really helped me.”
Richard went on to complete two volunteer placements at Vinnies in Crows Nest, where Priyanka was his manager.
After his volunteer placements, Richard was offered a position by Priyanka at the Neutral Bay store. With support from Global Skills, including work clothes and help getting to and from work, he settled into the role quickly. He now also works across Vinnies stores in Crows Nest and Willoughby.
“I can open and close. I can do anything. I learnt a lot at Crows Nest. My favourite part is customer service. I enjoy working in retail and being busy. I am grateful to Priyanka for giving me the opportunity. I feel more confident now and I am happy where I am.”
Priyanka added, “Richard started with us as a volunteer and has progressed incredibly quickly. He’s an all-rounder who takes on every task with confidence and a strong work ethic. We’re grateful to have him as part of the team.”
Congratulations again, Richard, and thank you for sharing your story.
