This week, 16 to 20 March, Global Skills is supporting Neurodiversity Celebration Week, an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the many different ways people think, learn and work.
As an Inclusive Employment Australia provider, we continually look for ways to strengthen the support we offer our participants. Yesterday, we welcomed Amanda, Taylah and Daniel from Macarthur Disability Services (MDS), who delivered a session for our Inclusive Employment Australia team. The session focused on supporting neurodivergent participants, including people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Amanda, MDS Regional Manager Employment Support, Taylah, MDS Senior Lead Behavioural Practitioner, and MDS Assistant Lead Practitioner, Daniel provided practical insights into the wide range of experiences across the autism spectrum. They highlighted the importance of tailored communication, clear instructions and clear expectations to support understanding and processing of information, as well as recognising what motivates participant’s goals. The session also provided an opportunity for our team to discuss ways to continue strengthening the support we provide throughout a participant’s employment journey.
Around 15 to 20 per cent of the population has a neurological difference. Neurodiversity includes thinking styles such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia (DCD), Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD. Strengthening our understanding helps ensure we continue to deliver inclusive and responsive services to our neurodivergent participants.
Global Skills extends sincere thanks to Amanda, Taylah and Daniel from MDS for delivering such an engaging and insightful session.
