Congratulations to Ourwa, a Global Skills Fairfield participant, on completing 6 months employment in the Hospitality Industry. Ourwa says “This job has allowed me to reach all my goals.”

At 35, Ourwa moved to Australia from the Middle East in 2022. A year later he joined Global Skills and was connected with his Employment Consultant, Anita after reaching level 2 proficiency in English. Ourwa recalls, “When I first came to Australia, I had no English language skills. I worked on improving my language skills and eventually earned a Cert III in English. Global Skills helped me a lot. Anita supported my job search and helped me get my food safety, RSA, and RCG certificates.”

When Ourwa found the job opening, Global Skills provided assistance with transport and a uniform, so he was ready to start. He began as a bartender, and with his qualifications and knowledge of Middle Eastern cuisine, he was soon promoted to manager. “I’m really happy with the job,” he says, “it’s everything I was hoping for.”

Ourwa also uses both Arabic and English in his role. “Some customers don’t speak English, so I help them with the menu and explain the food. For English-speaking customers, I explain the Middle Eastern dishes, the ingredients, and help with anything they need.”

He adds, “I want to share my story to motivate others who, like me, came to Australia on their own. I tell them, ‘Don’t give up.’ I’m still working on my language skills and gaining experience in customer service, cooking, taking orders, and talking to suppliers. I am learning every day.”
