Make a lasting impression with an employer by preparing well for an interview.

To prepare yourself BEFORE the interview you should:

  • Research – Gather information about the organisation and job. Use this information to prepare your own questions. Know how to get to the location of the interview by researching travel times by car or public transport
  • Review – Read the job advertisement and your resume, consider the questions that will be asked. Take a copy of your resume with you to the interview. Make sure your referees know you are currently looking for work
  • Rehearse – Practice answers to interview questions. (See typical job interview questions)
  • Prepare your clothes – Clean, iron and prepare your interview outfit
  • Be on time – Travel to the interview with time to spare. Being early demonstrates that you are eager, committed, dependable and professional. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early
  • Relax – Think of the interview as a conversation, not an interrogation. Take a few deep breaths and smile, it will slow down your heart rate if you are feeling nervous. Remember, feeling nervous at an interview shows you want to leave a great impression.

To perform at your best DURING the interview you should:

  • Greet the interviewer – Be prepared to shake hands, if offered
  • Volunteer positive information only
  • Listen carefully to the questions being asked – Be careful how you answer, stay positive and respond to the questions by giving examples where possible. Avoid rambling and veering off topic.
  • Be ready to ask suitable questions at the conclusion of the interview. This shows the interviewer that you are interested in the role and wish to find out more.
