Time to Work Employment Service

The Australian Government is committed to creating better opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to secure employment and help to close the gap.

In the 2017–2018 Federal Budget, the Australian Government announced the introduction of the Prison to Work program, a new in-prison employment service, subsequently renamed, the Time to Work Employment Service (TWES). The program is aimed at better preparing prisoners for their release, improving connections with post-release support services and better supporting the post-release Employment Services Provider to place ex-offenders into employment.

What services are available?

Global Skills is contracted to deliver TWES in the Junee and Mannus Correctional Centres.
 

As part of the service, participants receive:

  • a comprehensive assessment of their employment barriers
  • assistance to develop a detailed transition plan, and
  • a facilitated transfer from their in-prison service provider to their post-release employment service provider, where possible.

Who is eligible?

To participate in the Time to Work Employment Service, a prisoner must:

  • self-identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • be over 18 years of age, and
  • be sentenced and within three-to-four months of their release from prison.
